BIG NEWS!!!

Hi there BLW'ers....

well, it seemed a little silly to try and tell you much about what George is eating or not seeing as he is fast approaching 5!

I have also struggled to find a new mum to take over and run the blog for me!

As such it's really good news that George has a little Brother or Sister due in July 2011....so by Jan 2012 there will be a new baby starting his or her BLW adventure for you all to read up on!

not long now!!!

love

Hi Pasha,

I used to offer toast and fruit mainly for breakfast to start with. I also started with lunch, and added breakfast in later. If you go to the start of the blog then you can follow my story from the start. Kat starts about 7/8 months after me....

good luck, and remember - food before one is just for fun

Update..brocolli is a fav, along with bannana and avocado.. Carrots not so much, might need to cook a little more.
Tried bread and seem to get stuck on the roof of hit mouth, no good.
he had is first roast dinner at nanna's....love the roasted vegies and sucked the meat...so proud!
Nanna was quiet surprised as first time experiencing BLW.

best way to serve or get him to eat yoghurt?

Mel_x said...

I bought the yoghurt in tubes...I think it was Rachel's that do an organic one! xxx

did you have concerns over not eating enough? sometimes he seem to have alot, others just pushes it around the table. is this normal? I try to help a little is this ok?

Also tough to eat as a family at dinner time as husband doesnt get home until his bedtime....any help or tips, as i seem to just sit there and watch him eat?

On the food front he had his first sausage and fish cake...luvs tomato and cucumber. :)

The catch phrase of BLW is really "food before one is just for fun" - so I didn't worry too much. As long as the milk supply is fine, as milk is the main source of nutrition till 1.

Tempting as it is, ideally you shouldn't help out.

Meal times are hard, I also used to watch George eat a lot of the time. Or rather, would strategically ignore him - he used to not eat if watched quite often!! Maybe make his meal time your tea break, and sit and have a cuppa and chunner away like its a meal time? Or have the odd early dinner....or eat a "starter" with him and your meal later?

Yes. I'm so glad to find this blog as my son is just turning 6 months old, and you're right- there aren't a lot of BLW resources out there! I'm so excited about your blog!

I'm a mother in the states just started baby-led weaning about 6 weeks to 2 months ago. My son just started swallowing a couple weeks ago. Now he is just keeping food in his mouth and stuffing it. I keep having to clear it out because he gets so much in there he can't do anything and gets frustrated.

Mel,
Given that your little one is now 5, I'd love to hear a quick summary of how his weaning progressed and when some of his major milestones happened.
My DS2 is 10 months old. DS1 was traditionally weaned and is a great eater - 3 yrs old now. DS2 is BLWed and I'd like a betetr idea of what I can expect to see. Yes, yes every baby is different!
Woudl be great.
Thanks
Simona

Mel, now that your little one is 5 yrs old, would love to hear a summary of your experiences ie. whne he had major milestones and when he started doing certain things etc.
DS2 is 10 months old and BLWed. DS1 was traditionally weaned and a great eater at 3yrs old. Would like to know what sort of pregress I can expect at certain ages - of course I accept every baby is different.
Thanks

Hi Princessna,

gosh! That will test a pg woman's memory!! I have to say George was always ahead of his milestones, he rolled at 6 weeks and was walking by 10/11 months. He also sat and crawled a little early too...this helped reassure the pead when he was having weight gain issues - he was always just too active for his own good and thus a skinny minny!

Now, he still eats like a horse - and is not a fussy eater at all. He is developing his own tastes, so he isn't a fan of mushrooms but he will eat a mushroom risotto if that is what has been made for dinner. He is still a lover of fruit and veg, and will choose salad or veg over chips if we are at a restaurant. He has no real idea what a chicken nugget is - but will eat samosa's and saag paneer when we go for an indian meal!

Its very reassuring to send him into school knowing he will eat what he is given, my only concern is whether he has enough to eat! He is still very slim and tall - and active enough to make me want to collapse in a heap most days!

Is there anything else I can share with you?

throwing food suddenly. he seem to have one mouthful and then throwthe rest over his head. i pick it up and we repeat this process. any tips, is this normal?

Mel_x said...

Hi Pasha,

yes I do remember some food throwing! A clean cheap shower curtain under the high chair means that as much as possible can be salvaged.

Also, try not to react - as that will then be funny and cause more!

Good luck

he has started throwing food over his head? take one bite and throw, did this happen to you?

Mel_x said...

Pasha,

oh yes!! very annoying!!

I only put a little food at a time on the plate, had a clean mat down I felt happy to pick food up from and tried very hard to stay calm as every reaction from me was hilarious and caused more throwing!

keep repeating the mantra - food before one is just for fun

did you try baked beans for breaky? My LO has yoghurt and rice cereal mixed and fruit most mornings, looking for some variety....any tips? have tried toast but wheat a little tough on digestion.

Mel_x said...

I can't remember trying beans - but they are a good thing to try. Maybe the reduced sugar and salt ones?

I did try potato cakes too, and malt loaf as well xxx
